Discover
Concepts of Visual Language & Literacy
Working across photography, film, art, and everyday visual culture, students gain practical tools and the confidence to experiment, take risks, and develop a visual voice that feels personal and true. This class is not about following trends or being “right,” but about learning how images work and trusting the way you see.

Hi, I'm Tony.
MEET TONY ALTAMIRANO
Tony Altamirano is a Peruvian-born, Portland-based filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the architecture of belonging.
In his contemporary visual literacy courses, he prepares students for an image-saturated world, teaching them not only to read the language of the frame but to find the courage to create images that feel true. Believing that rules exist to be understood and then intentionally broken, Altamirano guides students past the pursuit of perfection and toward the discovery of their own voice. This philosophy mirrors his personal artistic practice—a collision of digital landscapes and analog soul—and is currently taking shape in pre-production for his grant-supported short film, The Things the Dust Remembers.
Working across film, documentary, photography, and digital media Tony is a visual artist, video producer and educator with over twenty years of experience. His work has been featured by NPR, highlighted by Adweek, and recognized by arts and cultural organizations. As an independent storyteller, Tony focuses on visual language, atmosphere, and meaning—exploring how images shape emotion, memory, and belief.
